Eighty Years' War (Dutch Revolt) vs Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604)

While Spain remained bound to the static Tercio doctrine, the Dutch continuously reformed under Maurice and Frederick Henry: smaller battalions, volley fire, engineer units, and standardized drill — forming the prototype of modern European armies.

The English Admiralty rapidly adapted new naval doctrines, developing long-range gunnery warfare and the privateer-state synergy. Spain clung to classic Tercio and boarding doctrines but, after 1589, reformed its convoy system, demonstrating asymmetric flexibility in the Atlantic.

Attrition War — Throughout 80 years, neither side could pursue a decisive annihilation victory; the war broke Spanish will through a series of sieges, naval clashes, and economic attrition.
