5 Military Metrics — Staff Scoring System
Azerbaijan, with its rich energy resources and advanced logistics infrastructure sourced from Turkey and Israel, was capable of sustaining a prolonged operation. In contrast, the nine-month blockade of the Lachin Corridor based on a Turkish-Russian understanding completely deprived the Karabakh Armenian forces of all supplies and reinforcements, causing their sustainability to totally collapse.
The Azerbaijani General Staff, with Turkish military advisory, directed the operation as a joint air-ground campaign with high tempo and coordination. An implicit engagement management was achieved with the Russian Peacekeeping Forces in Lachin. The Karabakh side's command and control system was paralyzed in the first hours by intense electronic warfare and precision strikes; the administration lacked legitimate governmental support.
Azerbaijan launched the offensive when the enemy was weak and unprepared, using new posts and roads built since the 2020 ceasefire. The September elections and the suitable diplomatic environment were assessed. The terrain was favorable for UAVs, giving no maneuver room to the Karabakh forces in the narrow valleys.
Azerbaijan monitored all military positions and ammunition depots in Karabakh in real-time using UAV and satellite intelligence. The Karabakh side lacked an intelligence network to assess Azerbaijan's exact offensive intention and timing before the operation; they also received no operational intelligence support from Armenia.
Azerbaijan's armed forces, equipped with Bayraktar TB2, Harop, and Israeli-made kamikaze UAVs, possessed absolute technological superiority. The morale of the Karabakh troops profoundly collapsed due to isolation from Armenia and the indifference of the international community, reducing their force multipliers to almost zero.
Strategic Gains & Victory Analysis
Long-term strategic gains assessment after battle
Victor's Strategic Gains
- ›Azerbaijan established sovereignty over the entirety of Nagorno-Karabakh in an operation lasting less than 24 hours.
- ›The political and military existence of the separatist entity in the region was terminated, indisputably ensuring Azerbaijan's territorial integrity.
Defeated Party's Losses
- ›All institutions of the de facto Republic of Artsakh were disarmed and dissolved; its existence ended de jure and de facto.
- ›The Karabakh Armenian administration was forced to surrender, having received no tangible support from the international community, leading to a strategic collapse.

Victory Without Fighting · Intelligence Asymmetry · Heaven and Earth
Victory Without Fighting
Through a months-long humanitarian corridor crisis and diplomatic attacks, Azerbaijan attrited the Karabakh administration and deterred Armenia from military intervention. The focus of Russia and the West on Ukraine gave Azerbaijan the opportunity to psychologically and politically defeat its opponent before the battle.
Intelligence Asymmetry
The Azerbaijani army knew the existing defense status, weapon systems, and unit locations of Karabakh in minute detail. Karabakh and Armenia, conversely, entirely failed to read the modifications in Azerbaijan's military intentions and engagement rules.
Heaven and Earth
The clear weather of September was ideal for UAV operations. Although the mountainous terrain could have provided an advantage to the defender, this was negated against modern sensors and precision munitions, proving the axiom 'Mountains are no longer friends'.
Western War Doctrines
Battle of Annihilation
Maneuver & Interior Lines
Azerbaijani forces advanced simultaneously from different axes with lightning speed, penetrating deep into enemy resistance points. Through encirclement and interior line maneuvers, the entire front line of the Karabakh forces completely collapsed within 24 hours.
Psychological Warfare & Morale
For the Azerbaijani soldiers, this meant the motivation of 'the final victory ensuring territorial integrity'. The Karabakh Armenian fighters, in contrast, experienced an extraordinary morale collapse due to the trauma of the 2020 defeat, despair over Armenia's support, and the panic evacuation of civilians.
Firepower & Shock Effect
Azerbaijani artillery and kamikaze UAVs struck command centers and air defense systems deep within Karabakh simultaneously with surprising precision. This initial shock made impossible the emergence of any organized resistance.
Adaptive Staff Rationalism
Center of Gravity · Intelligence · Dynamism
Center of Gravity
For Azerbaijan, the Schwerpunkt was the enemy's command-control and air defense network; the first strike broke the backbone of the resistance. The force center of the Karabakh side was the 'will to remain', which totally dissolved through political isolation and military hopelessness.
Deception & Intelligence
Rather than a large-scale military deception, Azerbaijan applied operational masking through the humanitarian corridor and anti-terror rhetoric, conducting diplomatic deception maneuvers ensuring the passivity of the Russian Peacekeeping Forces.
Asymmetric Flexibility
The Karabakh forces, reliant on static trench warfare, could show no doctrinal flexibility against modern UAVs and precision-guided munitions. Azerbaijan, conversely, implemented an asymmetric and highly flexible offensive doctrine using unmanned systems as its center of gravity.
Section I
Staff Analysis
The Azerbaijani army, modernized with the advisory support of the Turkish Armed Forces, is highly trained and perfectly applied the doctrinal lessons of the 2020 war. The operational plan was built on simultaneously paralyzing all critical infrastructure and defensive lines of Karabakh without engaging the Russian peacekeeping forces' area of responsibility. The Karabakh Armenian forces, however, could not recover after 2020, remained with an outdated Soviet doctrine, demotivated, and as a garrison under heavy blockade. Militarily, the battle concluded with Azerbaijan's unequivocal 'battle of annihilation' victory.
Section II
Strategic Critique
The Azerbaijani command demonstrated great success in strategic timing, making the best use of the international inattention window created by the Ukraine War and the political fragility within Armenia. The greatest mistake of the Karabakh Armenian administration was its reliance on an unrealistic defense strategy, increasing civilian losses by delaying evacuation and surrender decisions. The inability of the Armenian government to correctly read the crisis and provide military support accelerated the rapid collapse of the structure in Karabakh. The indifference of the international community practically endorsed this outcome.
